    It's one thing to say that editors should exercise judgment about what they publish. It's another thing to say that journalists shouldn't "follow up on" stories that potentially could be dangerous -- especially if government officials get to define the terms.

      some concern for the safety of the country.  At some point they should have said, "That's it.  We're not talking about this anymore."  Or they just should have stopped asking questions about it.

        I'm lost. Did we somewhere establish that the journalists under discussion here are people who evinced a lack of concern for the safety of the country?

        I don't think that anyone in the administration is offering that as a rationalization, and I don't think that anyone here should, either.
