  •  What's really sad about this is that Karl's source (8+ / 0-)

must have expected to get away with re-wording the e-mail.  Or, even worse, knew the truth would come out but not soon enough to smother the incorrect story.

The Talking Points Memo story has two responses from ABC to Jake tapper's CNN story.  Jaw dropping, IMO.  Worth the effort to click through and read.  Karl can't possibly expect to have any credibility left.

(Sorry.  My iPad skills don't stretch to pasting in the ABC responses I mentioned.)

“Assuming the email cited by Jake Tapper is accurate, it is consistent with the summary quoted by Jon Karl,” an ABC spokesperson told Erik Wemple of the Washington Post.
It now seems that the ABC spokesperson jumped the gun because clearly the accounts differ substantially and Karl gets that. He says he asked his source to explain the discrepancy and got this response …

I asked my original source today to explain the different wording on the Ben Rhodes e-mail, and the fact that the words “State Department” were not included in the e-mail provided to CNN’s Tapper.
This was my source’s response, via e-mail: “WH reply was after a long chain of email about State Dept concerns. So when WH emailer says, take into account all equities, he is talking about the State equities, since that is what the email chain was about.”

        The upshot is:

The source was not permitted to make copies of the original e-mails. The White House has refused multiple requests – from journalists, including myself, and from Republican leaders in Congress – to release the full e-mail exchanges.
The White House could still clear up this confusion by releasing the full e-mail transcripts that were provided for brief review by a select number of members of Congress earlier this year. If there’s “no ‘there’ there,” as President Obama himself claimed yesterday, a full release should help his case.

        •  Does that mean some Congressstaffer made it up? (2+ / 0-)

If ABC's source is some member of Congress or a staffer, as looks likely, then it may be a GOP politico who doctored (invented) the fake e-mail, and passed it off to ABC as the real one.
Seems to me an investigation of this could go in some very interesting directions.

          •  Not "doctored" (4+ / 0-)

He's basically admitting he never saw an actual e-mail. He just worked from "notes" that someone who saw some e-mail made - said notes reflecting their shorthand assumptions. Which assumptions he swallowed whole. So now he's griping that he wouldn't have to rely on such assumptions if only the White House would give him all the original source emails. Doofus.

I am not sure that I really want to. However, it does sound like he did some actual journalism here.
