  •  Every marijuana test available measures (7+ / 0-)

the amount of marijuana consumed over the prior 7-14 days. There is no test today to determine whether the driver is under the influence of marijuana when the test is done. So you should be leery of any MJ testing until technology produces a reliable way of testing the amount of MJ recently consumed.

    •  That's good info... (2+ / 0-)

Something which, obviously, isn't covered on the local news (I live in Colorado and one of the things law enforcement is screaming about is a 'limit' on driving while high).  I guess what I am saying is, I'm not against a 'test' and a 'limit' with MJ in a driving situation.

which is useful when driving on our chaotic roads. If there is a mandated maximum for marijuana levels, there should rightly also be a mandated minimum.

      •  That was one of my concerns when I voted to (0+ / 0-)

legalize recreational mj in this last election.  I, too, want to avoid impaired drivers.  If no test exists, we should come up with one.  In the meantime, I can accept a level in the blood stream test, I guess.  IOW, I'd rather have a test and have it be questionable than have no test and have impaired drivers.

I'm open to changing my mind, however, if someone can persuade me.

If Doc is correct, then you can't drive for two weeks after you smoke.  Which seems extreme and a loop-hole in the law.  The people of Colorado obviously want to allow recreational drug use.  It's reasonable to assume that should be part of a 'normal' lifestyle.  Waiting for two weeks to drive seems pretty abnormal.

possible to test blood levels of THC.  The reason for the whole two week thing is because they test for THC metabolites (the stuff THC breaks down into) rather than for the drug itself because it's easier to detect those.  Now the hard part is coming up with a test that works without requiring the officer or whoever to actually tap a vein which would result in quite a bit of people with permanent nerve damage as how many officers would give up rather than spending 10 minutes vigorously digging around at random because they are frustrated that they can't hit the vein

    •  Yes there is, you just have to test for THC itself (1+ / 0-)

rather than THC metabolites like they usually do.

      •  That can only be done by drawing (0+ / 0-)

blood, which is not practical. There is a rectal test as well, but also impractical.

        •  What there needs to be is a non-invasive blood (0+ / 0-)

test like the one they were working on for blood sugar using  near infrared spectroscopy.  Or at least a test that only requires a basic finger prick rather than drawing blood from a vein (which I would not trust cops to do considering how badly many "professional" phlebotomists seem to screw it up).
