  •  Well, who cares about "Others." (7+ / 0-)

I'm sorry, but I don't understand people who care that others might find what they have to say objectionable. People should just say whatever it is they have to say, and then take the criticism as it comes.

I seriously do not understand half of the wailing and gnashing of teeth on this site by people who insist that they're "not allowed" to say certain shit, or they're being "silenced" or some such bullshit. This is a political forum. Passionate argument is the name of the game. Having a thick skin is essential. People who can't tell the difference between criticism and hatred don't belong here.

I get personally attacked all the time. I don't care. Why would I give a fuck what anonymous douchebags on the internet have to say? I just say what I feel, and defend my position.

The only person who should be feared around here is kos. If he doesn't like what you have to say, he can kick you out. After all, it's his house. Other than that ... everything's pretty much a fair ball.

and I'm not trying to imply people are being silenced.

But people very much DO care about what "others" say here, to the point where we have entire diaries based on what some kossack said that somebody didn't like, blockquoted, named and linked for further "public shaming."

Entire subthreads in diaries are devoted to who rec'd what comment, as if the direction of national events will somehow be impacted by a few bad-comment-making bloggers and their upraters.

And it's not necessarily this "impeachment" incident I'm talking about. It's happened a couple of times in the recent past.

The outrage response/public shaming diaries will have about as much impact on events as the original comments/diaries they denounce will.

Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us.

      •  Well I'm unsure what public shaming you're (3+ / 0-)

referring to. If you're referring to the recent diary in which four Kossacks were called out for racism, those four people were sanctioned by the admins and the author of the controversial diary was banned. In that case, there was a broad consensus that that should have happened. That kind of shaming is quite rare, although I've seen in on "both sides" or "all sides" or what have you.

Generally, if the admins have a problem with someone, then most folks aren't going to be nice about what got them into trouble. Apart from that, I really don't see what you're talking about. I actually agree with kos when he says all he sees are assholes. There's assholes on every side. People shouldn't step into the arena if they can't handle that.

        •  That's not the instance I was referring to (1+ / 0-)

Though I will say that that diary accomplished nothing more than what had already been accomplished nearly immediately anyway, and lead to some unnecessary misunderstandings between Kossacks within the comments that took a bit of time to iron out. Others might feel it was productive, I saw it as another flamefest.

But in the spirit of wanting to refrain from dragging other diaries into this one, which is looking more and more likely the more I persist with this train of thought, I'll just say... Nevermind...

I have the example, just opting to not persist.

      •  I think... (Oh no! here she goes... ) (7+ / 0-)

Most of the people who complain about being silenced or whatever nice way you said it about "caring what others think" DON'T give a crap about anyone (besides maybe a few of their pals) think.

It's a big overwrought "look at me I'm a persecuted victim who gets attacked because I spoke my mind" act.

How do I know? Because of the viciousness with which they attack anyone who simply says, "yes, but..."

People who are being silenced or who are afraid of being silenced don't write diatribes. They speak softly (and perhaps subvertly) all the while hoping no one notices them.

It's funny. There are a handful of people who I do care what they think.  I'm always happy to see if they tip one of my comments. Many of them don't agree with me on many major policy issues. In fact, if you were asked to write up a list, you'd probably only get a couple right.

But these folks are logical rational thinkers. They're consistent, fair and open minded. They're willing to say things like "I didn't think about that way," or even "wow, I was wrong about that." Some are funny and snarky. Some are almost always dead serious.  They rarely resort to personal taunts, but will defend themselves and their ideas vigorously. So they're not snotty, but they don't walk away from a challenge.

But when I see one of them in a diary, I know it's possible I'll learn something new, read something interesting, or gather a new perspective.

I've never heard any of these folks say they're being silenced. And none of them scream or yell. They just state things clearly and logically and let their ideas do all the heavy lifting.

that you are on my "I care what you think" list. ;)

I figure offering that snark-free and really-is-true fact upfront will buy me some time while I continue to try and process your substantive comment with little-to-no brain cells remaining in operation at this time of night.

I get what you're saying on the whole, grover. I'm pretty sure we agree. lol. Near bedtime.
