    Long ago, the '40s or '50s, there was a builder in chicago who built house underground. He didn't put in a furnace, but he promised to supply one to any buyer who asked for it. None ever did. If you are far enough underground, the temperature is essentially stable all the time.

    The system worked, and AC wouldn't be needed, either. (In those days, nobody had air conditioning.) That leaves lighting and such appliances as TVs and computers as the only eneregy use.

    OTOH, it looked odd.
