    1) He's an NCO, not an officer.  It makes a difference where military justice is concerned.

    2) He was probably assigned to the job; at most, he may have been hand-picked and asked if he would take the job.  This is not unusual; there are more than a few slots for which the qualification is little more than "rank of [Y] plus training course [Y]".  

    3) There have been several comments (and diaries) concerning the ability of convening authorities (the officers who convene courts martial) to overturn the findings.  Yes, that is subject to abuse, but it's important to remember WHY that provision is in place.  It is intended to protect soldiers from "kangaroo courts," and has done so effectively for a very long time.  Let's not go overboard and junk it just yet.

    The word "parent" is supposed to be a VERB, people...
