      gays in the military! /snark

Given that gay men are not immune to being creeps, I wonder how long until we get the first male rape in the military? Planet wingnuttia will have a field day with that.

According to Claire McCaskill on MSNBC the other night, over half of the rapes in the military are male on male.

Don't kid yourself that only women are raped.  There are actually more men raped in this country every year than women, due to the number of rapes that occur in our prisons.

Men raping men (especailly in prisons) is not necessarily gay rape.  I misspoke there.

shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what rape and sexual predation really are about.

Using sex as a weapon is about power, control, abuse, violence and brutality.  It isn't really about sex.  It is about predation.

While sexual predators may have preferences about what "type" of prey they pursue, they are not expressing anything close to normal sexual desires and shouldn't be confused as to be doing so.

The Chain of Command is currently aligned to protect predators and further injure/eject victims.  It doesn't matter what sex you are in the face of that kind of system.  Neither men nor women can fight a system as all-powerful and corrupt as the one that is currently in place.

hugely important detail that nearly 50% of the 26,000 who said that they had been subjected to inappropriate sexual contact in the survey were MEN.

opportunity aspect of this breakdown in order suggests that much much more than sexual politics is at play here.

I think it would be interesting to find out what the statistics on simple assault are in the military these days.

I think that the sexual assault rate is probably just the tip of the iceberg now.  I would bet that going beyond just sexual assault statistics we would find other evidence of behaviors that are similarly predatory and brutal - and, of course very importantly, indicative of a lawless and uncivilized culture.

Lawful evil, to use a Dungeons and Dragons idiom. You can do damn near anything to those below you, and owe obedience to those above you, but may subvert orders if you can get away with it.

This needs to be addressed, as others have noted, as evidence of a systemic problem.

              •  It is lawless. (0+ / 0-)

There are rules of conduct in the military and higher rank does not empower anyone to break the law under the rules and regulations that are in place.  The rules and regulations have been thrown out whilst the chain of command has remained in place.  We probably think ourselves lucky that we haven't seen an internal revolt in response to the abuse of power that is clearly baked into the system at present.
