being allowed 501(c)4 status is the real scandal.
That IRS designation should be abolished.

    •  My neighborhood association is a 501(c)(4) (0+ / 0-)

Saturday is our annual clean-up day, and the association is providing shovels, rakes and brooms so we can clean up our neighborhood.  The association purchased those items and we use them every year.  In the summer, the association hosts a yard sale where we all sell our stuff/junk. The association pays for the advertising to bring people in to buy our stuff.

We host an art fair every summer and neighborhood walks in the fall.

Abolishing 501(c)(4) means our association is no longer tax-exempt and it has to pay taxes on the money we get from the art fair, money that is used in the neighborhood and contributed to area schools.  If we have to pay taxes on our revenue, that's less money available for the neighborhood.

      501(c)(4) is not the problem.

because I have to pay taxes. Why is your goal more important than mine, and deserving of preferential tax treatment?

        •  Well, OK. No sense trying to have a rational (0+ / 0-)

conversation.  Instead let's try to win the thread by making more sweeping statements than the last person.

I think community associations play a very important role in our society, and I don't have a problem giving them tax-exempt status to help them flourish.  You don't appear to agree.
