    house would likely fly away, even if it remained intact.  The safe room has to be firmly anchored and even then is mainly for protection from flying debris.  There are huge tornadoes which will just wipe the foundation clean, regardless of what's bolted down to it.  

    We were so freaked about no basements (decades ago) that we looked into everything, but gave up.  We decided just to be as equally fatalistic as our neighbors and just "live with it."  

    I'd grown up with basements and feel their convenience (for extra space, utilities, mechanicals, storage) and protection just cannot be beat, as well as making the house cooler in hot weather. But... very few around which is a shame.

      to get a basement stable, you have to go down below the "blow sand" layer -- my aunt who had a basement / shelter put in when they built, back in about 1969 or 1970, had to excavate to a depth of 45 feet to hit clay sufficient the basement wouldn't cave in and suck down the top layer as it fell.
