to point out legal facts and realities relevant to the situation. Unfortunately, as recent events have made abundantly clear, this is not necessarily a time for reasoned argument.  It pains me to say that, and I'm sorry if it offends, but sometimes we need a few progressive flamethrowers to break through the bullshit.

organize a 501 c 4 group to advocate for the repeal of the 16th Amendment (the one that established the income tax) and the IRS has to treat that application the same as one that call itself "Friends of the IRS".

There seems to be great confusion about what these different non-for-profit groups can and can't do. This chart might help.

I just find the whole situation funny.  Maybe its because I'm punch-drunk after spending 20 of the last 24 hours writing my dissertation, which I no longer even really care about at this point.  Oh well.  I'm sure I'll fail to see the humor in the morning

You, me, and everyone else knows that political activities are the primary purpose of these astroturf groups.

as long as it isn't coordinated with any political party or candidate. 501 c 4's can be very political.

between what IS allowed and what SHOULD be allowed.  I understand the law and what is allowed.  I disagree with the law and think these groups on both sides are abusing the law (which was the whole damn purpose of the law anyway lets be honest)

is never done by conceding to the opponent "what the law allows".  There are questions of values, appropriateness, honor and integrity, and those are the ground politics, as opposed to law enforcement, are or should be fought out on.  Although I realize that in the modern US, even blatant violations of the law and every historic moral code of decency are allowed to slide when the right and center do them.  (cf. torture)

Winning politics makes a public laughing-stock of right-wingers trying to claim to be advancing "social welfare".

Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?
