IRS Targets Tea Party.  That was the total coverage of this on NPR's Morning Edition.

Perhaps they had other coverage later, but this non-journaliism pissed me off so much that I couldn't continue to listen.  if I didn't like WERN's music so much, public radio would lose another sustaining member.

      The T-Party is astro-turf, I thought that was well-known.

So much of the main news outlets are just lapping up the conservative frame on this.  The Tea Party groups made up only about 25% of the groups flagged for additional review.  It would be a scandal if they were the ONLY ones flagged, and no other groups were.  It would be a scandal if Crossroads was flagged but Priorities USA was not.  But that was not the case.  Groups that were primarily political were flagged for being primarily political.  Better standards would be useful because the word "tea party" is only of limited utility in spotting such groups.

A cousin of mine tried to argue that this obviously affected the 2012 election.  ("Heaven help us," was my initial thought upon hearing that bogus claim spewing right from the echo chamber of conservative media.)  If it did affect an election, then the group clearly did not even merit 501 (c) 5 status IN THE FIRST PLACE.  So that point undermines itself.
