  •  Thanks for the great diary, 641 ... (12+ / 0-)

I've been enjoying the swallows here on the bluff overlooking the White River in Cotter, Ark. The discussion makes me want to put out the effort to ID the ones I see. I know they live in mud nests under the bridge, but I didn't know to look for the long, split tail. Maybe if I squeeze off enough photos I can get a good at them ;)

Someone at a resort about a quarter-mile upstream has put up a really good bird list, excellent for a newbie like me. It says we have both cliff and barn swallows breeding here, so maybe we get flights of both. The camera can certainly see better than I can!

The critters messed with my deck while I was away, and I've been lazy so it's really messy. (That's not water in the cardinal's bowl; he's wading in sunflower seeds.) Apologies, but I wanted to post this picture of the first indigo bunting I've seen this year. Such fine colors!

We've had an abundance of rain this week, and many farmers across northern Arkansas have already harvested their first crop of hay. During last year's severe drought, it just died in place, a very sad thing to see. Farmers couldn't afford feed, and the stock barns had so many cattle sellers they had to turn some away. So seeing the first harvest in is wonderful. The pasture across the river from my house is still growing, though, and there is little yellow left. Hope we have a decent summer.

The mulberries in the yard are red, so in about a week I expect a rush of joy in my sweet tooth!
