My great great great grandfather Col F.S Rutherford lead the 97th Illinois Volunteer Regiment, Landram's Brigade, 10th Div.. Col Rutherford commanded the 97th which was on the Union Left during the battle. It was under constant Confederate artillery fire for 2 hours during the fight. The 97th fought with distinction in the Vicksburg campaign. For the next six to seven days he was involved in a battle each day. At Vicksburg the regiment was part of the assault on the Confederate defenses.
