and, he mentioned that the ADL came down on him, very hard, asking, "Do you think that an overhead Busby Berkeley shot of a dancing swastika is funny?".
"It wouldn't be in the movie if it wasn't.", Mr. Brooks replied.

"You're a dedicated swallower of fascism." Billy Bragg

with because he's Mel Brooks. Look at Blazing Saddles. Of course, everyone knows that when Mel Brooks gives you dancing swastikas or nuns doing water ballet or the "n" word about 100 times in a movie (I refer to the hatred of Obama as the "Blazing Saddles Effect") he's being funny but he's also making a point--a liberal point.

Sadly, I don't think he'll make another film. I was hoping for just one more.

I resent that. I demand snark, and overly so -- Markos Moulitsas.

Brooks has a very strange comic genius.  I like how he takes on serious material with the attitude, "come on, laugh a little."  Alas, I have that attitude, but without the genius to make it work.  My friends and family look at me strangely.

humorlessly asking that question, and Mel Brooks just ... well ... what possible answer could there be? Just the asking of the question makes me laugh.

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
