Munich, in southern Germany, is about the same latitude as Seattle. Imagine what it could do if it had, say, a Florida. Or Arizona. Or a California.

Imagine how much wind power it could generate if it had, say a North Dakota. Or a Kansas. Or thousands of miles of coastline.

So tell us all again why anyone needs nuclear.

Do you have an answer for that or not?

What we need is a Democrat in the White House.

      December 22nd . . .

Half of Florida will be under water by the time you get enough solar panels installed there to do more than run the air conditioning, and then a hurricane will blow them down.  There won't be enough water in Arizona to wash the dust off the things . . . and nobody will want to leave their air conditioned office to do it anyway.

But seriously . . . solar powered air conditioning makes sense in Florida and Arizona in the summer.  Don't count on it to turn on the lights in Seattle in the winter.

can substantially decrease the need for electric-powered air conditioning as well.

plenty of time and plenty of resources to re-build every house in America (the whole world, for that matter) with "smart passive solar design".  Five years should do it . . . ten at the outside . . . by then all the windmills and solar farms should be installed and we can shut down all the coal and gas fired generators.  And we'll plant hemp everywhere to make biochar and live happily ever after.

          Maybe . . .

in California has to meet a lot of standards that are based on passive solar techniques.

It doesn't have to cost more and it saves the homeowner a lot of money.

Old houses in Arizona were all built using those ideas, because there was no AC.

            You have to start somewhere.

It used to be that every house in California was built with a nice wood shake roof. Most of those roofs are gone now, either because they burned down or wore out, and starting in the 1990s you had to replace them with something fireproof.

A journey starts with a single step.

and the new natural gas plants . . . whatever they're needed for is what we need nuclear for . . . because we sure as scat need not to burn coal and natural gas . . .

It's sad that you lack the knowledge and imagination to break the wasteful American paradigm. I feel sorry for you.

        •  I'll believe you (0+ / 0-)

when I see the coal and gas plants shut down, and no new ones being built.

          Not before.

Let me know when you find the "imagination" to do that.

Until then your "renewable" delusion is killing the planet.

          •  pro nuclear "concern" noted (0+ / 0-)

If this nation put half the overhead, including our tax subsidies, into renewables as we've wasted on the nuclear-industrial complex over the last half-century, your cheerleading would be moot.

As you persist in trying to commandeer this thread, you're merely borderline trolling.

" Ultimately, nuclear power isn't growing here because of the financial costs of mistakes, not the opinions of the anti-nuclear left, in my opinion. "

His pro-nuke stance, if it makes you feel better to perceive it as such, is much more nuanced and well reasoned; i.e. a much more multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary approach than you can even conceive of.
