    •  It happened with gay people. (5+ / 0-)

As more of us came out and people realized we were actually part of their families, that we were among their coworkers, and that we were their friendly neighbors, attitudes changed.  In short, personal connections matter.  My own understanding of racism was largely shaped by getting to know people who weren't white.

The analogy to gay people isn't perfect, of course.  Unlike racial minorities, LGBTs can't necessarily be avoided by, say, moving to a different neighborhood, because you never know when your child, or sibling, or cousin, or even parent will turn out to be LGBT.  So many people have been forced by circumstances to confront their homophobia and transphobia.  That won't necessarily be as common with racism.  But as nonwhites make up an increasingly large segment of our population, more and more white Americans will find themselves working alongside people of color.  When that happens, I think that most reasonable people will come to see how wrong their prejudices are.

Great diary, by the way.  Giving you an A again today.  ;-)
