    to know how much petitions contributed to those changes, it would be great to know, but these kinds of things are highly intangible.

    Surely there was an influence. I hope that influence is something that becomes more transparent through better information in the future. At the end though, when it comes down to a single person's change of mind, how would we know with any certainty unless they admit that petitions were the proximate cause.

    I'm just a nuts-and-bolts kind of guy and like to do things which I can see having an impact.  Registering voters, for example, results in direct statistics of more registered voters.
