  •  Protein is what you need. (8+ / 0-)

Whatever source you prefer. How much is dependent on gender, age, muscle mass and exercise. You need carb, fat and fiber as well.

Recent study found women who ate 35 grams of protein at breakfast had less trouble with hunger cravings all day. Figure out what you've been getting in and bring it up to at least 21 grams. (2 eggs are 12 - 14) More if you are male, under forty and do some regular exercise.

Remember the breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper, rule. Keep in mind that the body has a lot of capacity to store energy in the liver and fat cells. Protein storage is far more limited and muscle mass can be broken down to provide energy - not protein.

Protein and fat are insulin neutral. They don't create surges and crashes. Fiber can slow the absorption of carbs if they aren't heavy duty sugars. There was a study some time ago that I really identified with. Even a non-caloric sweetener may trigger an insulin release. The hypothesis was that hunter gatherers developed a capacity from the taste buds to secrete an amount of insulin that correlated to what the person had needed over the past 24 hours. So if the clan had just hit a big berry patch, the body was able to adjust to the sudden intake of more fructose.

I am very sensitive to sugar and sweet tastes, usually don't tolerate more than scant amount of sweetening and have been all natural for 10 + years. Still became diabetic. A lot of other hormone issues probably contributing.

Also consider a mid morning snack like 1/2 cup of cottage cheese (14 gm) and some carrots or tomato. 2 mozzarella cheese sticks and an apple. Almonds and apricots.

Consider getting some unflavored whey or egg white protein powders and playing around with flavorings you like to make smoothies. (You can add them to protein low recipes too.) Fix before you go to bed. Ready to drink when you get up.
