  •  Thank you for this thoughtful post. (12+ / 0-)

Found it most interesting after just reading Rachel Maddow's piece on the phony Benghazi emails embraced by the beltway as the scandal to beat all scandals.

MADDOW: And now, part of the scandal here is a press scandal. You know what? When you get used like this and you end up publishing false information, false quotes, you have to correct it. But the bigger scandal here is not a process matter, not a press matter. There's a very stark fact that somebody in Congress right now, or somebody working for somebody in Congress right now, a staffer, concocted a big lie to try to make the White House look very desperately bad on this Benghazi scandal that they otherwise have not been able to get traction on.

Who told the lie? And a note to my journalist pals who got involved in this scandal. If your source lied to you, they are not actually a source. They are a con artist and you are their victim. It means you don't have to protect them any more. They're not a source.

When you get lied to, when you are a tool of somebody else's deception, when you get lied to, the person lying to you is no longer a source, they are news. Their lie to you is itself news and you can report that news. Republican Congressional offices shopped a false dossier as if it was a White House email. That is a story. The office and the staffers and the members of Congress maybe who did that... that is news. And if you know who it is, you can say so.

When MSM starts actually reporting facts and engages in a thoughtful, critical, analysis of the issues for the American people, when they own their mistakes, then I'll take a supposed assault on the Press seriously.

The true assault on the freedom of the press and the right of the American people to be truly informed, has been the take over of MSM by corporate interests and scandal whoring.

Should be to report news honestly. Not to lie, and not to create or become the news. And definitely not to skew it to an agenda. At that point, it becomes propaganda, and nothing more.

      •  Yes. (4+ / 0-)

Propaganda and a distraction from the real issues that matter.

Meanwhile, the earth burns due to climate change, threatening life as we know it. But nothing is more important than another made for TV Republican conspiracy theory, hair on fire, Congressional hearing, right?

only a piece of something, and whether we'll ever see it all remains to be seen. That does not mean the admin is being nefarious and covering up, simply that it may be big and complex and possibly necessarily secret. Or not. Time will tell.

I do get tired of keyboard kommandoes saying what reporters should and shouldn't do when they're never done that kind of work. Yes, the system is bad these days. Yes, five corporations control most of the communications in this country.

And yes, there are still some reporters, mostly print, out there still trying to do a decent job against all the odds.
