Sorry, I can't say more than that. Didn't even read the diary. I couldn't bring myself to. The wounds are too fresh, still.  I had to put my mutt down a little over six years ago. The flags were flying at half-mast to honor the passing of Gerald Ford. I kind of felt they were flying for my adopted son. I still refer to him as my biological son's "older brother". I mean, he taught me more about parenthood than any thousand books could have. And there were many mistakes I made with him that I never made with my biological son, and all of it was due to him. I will never forget him. In the final analysis, dogs aren't people, but they are as close as you can get without actually speaking. Losing a dog is losing a friend. I feel for you. But please remember, he's never truly gone so long as you don't forget him.

    •  Thanks, although I've not had human kids... (4+ / 0-)

it's good to know that what we've experienced over the years really does bear some resemblance to actual parenting.

because I wasn't a better dog owner. I wasn't a bad dog owner, and I won't claim I'm a good father (you'll have to ask my son when he's old enough), but it was definitely a trial run.
