We went through something similar with our yellow lab 4 years ago. She had her spleen removed and went through some chemo. It gave us eight more months with her mostly good. She went through a couple of ups and downs during that time, but then the last couple of days were similar to what you described. Not able to keep anything down, not able to stand or go out and come back in without assistance.
And yet when we made the decision to bring her to the vet and told her she was going in the car her head perked up as if she was excited. Didn't make it any easier.
It was peaceful and it was the humane thing to do, but not easy. And she was such a sweetheart that even know my wife and i can get teary thinking about it. And we haven't gotten another dog, though we keep talking about it.
They do add so much to your lives, but the end is hard.
Hope you and your partner can find peace and remember the great times you had with your dog.
