  •  This is true, Anastasia. Republicans' profound (3+ / 0-)

disdain for-- indeed, refusal to respect--  Democrats is an important factor in the wimpiness and inaction of Dems since 2000, but especially since 2010.  How can one party, the Democrats, continue to engage with its opposition party, the Republicans, as though there were a level playing field of rules, civility, and polity?  This is absurd when those with whom one is engaging refuse flatly to grant one any form of legitimacy,

That's one more thing to add to my long list of small problems. --my son, age 10

    •  The disrespect goes back further, to Bill Clinton (3+ / 0-)

at least. The 1990's is when we started to hear expressions like "the L-word"... a deliberate campaign to not merely criticize liberals, but to shame them.

The open disrespect for liberalism, and liberal candidates, gained power through the "social media" of the nineties... right-wing talk-radio. Hosts like Rush Limbaugh connected conservative leaders to a deep well of white racial resentment that simmered below the surface of suburban America.

Overt racism was totally uncool by that time, but the people who "lost" the desegregation battles of the Seventies could vent their anger on "liberals" without being scolded by their children.

In the more sophisticated circles, jokes about "political correctness" turned up in the nineties. This shut down critical thinking and stained liberal policy as something akin to Stalinist orthodoxy. "Politically incorrect" became a badge of honor among Gingrich's "counter revolutionaries". But they too were fueled by the racist undercurrent.
