same level of responsibility as oopsie silly me gun owners treat their firearms.

    Picture this.

Lisa leaves her car in a children's park with the door open and the engine running. This is basically what gun owners do. They say they are doing the best they can. But when their best isn't good enough, they merely say oopsie, silly me, and get a do over.

Read gunFAIL and gun Crazy weekly for real time examples. Next week there will be a column just like last week and the week before. In fact as long as these diarists care to compile them, they will be full.

The liberty tree is being watered with oopsie blood.

at this point. The innocent gun owner is robbed by the big bad gun robbers that proceed to shoot up the neighborhood.

The well known oopsie clause in the 2nd Amendment. My gun was stolen. Excuse me while I run to the store to get another gun, someone might need to be protected from a homicidal maniac. I need to be armed at all times. Oh and watch out for that gun I used to have it was a beauty.

    •  Thats was pretty non-responsive. (0+ / 0-)

If someone steals your car and uses it in a crime, you will not face charges.

      That's just reality.

If someone leaves a loaded gun laying around in a childrens park, and a kid is injured or killed with it, they will face charges.

But that's not "basically what gun owners do".  It's (roughly) what one or two nuts do a week in a nation with over 60 million gun owners.

We need far better regulation of guns in this country, but ridiculous inaccurate analogies and flatly stupid collective blame games reduce this to nothing more than another round in an unending culture war that has nothing to do with protecting kids.

Because of that crap, we can't good legislation passed and kids suffer.

If the approach to getting decent regulation of automobiles had consisted in the main of posting data on every auto accident and claiming that all drivers were just stupid irresponsible assholes based on those anecdotes, we'd probably still be losing 55k a year on our highways.

      •  you will if you don't report (1+ / 0-)

it as being stolen. If guns were regulated, we'd know who possessed them at all times, and people would be held liable for any mayhem they caused. Instead we shrug.

      •  These guns aren't stolen. They are left accessible (1+ / 0-)

        and loaded.

The equivalent in cars would be the car left running with the door open. Deal with it.

60 million guns and we can't legislate that owners actually keep their guns.

I am of the opinion that any accidental shooting regardless of outcome should be a felony with loss of gun privileges for a period of years.

I am of the opinion that any failure to maintain possession of a firearm should be a felony regardless of outcome resulting in the loss of gun privileges for a period of years.

These two felonies I think can be safely derived from the keep wording of the 2nd Amendment.
