  •  Cheers to Star Trek (16+ / 0-)

I am going to put this out there, amongst the thorns and arrows that I have seen slung at the latest cinema version.  Went to see the movie on Sunday morning, in a nearly deserted theater near Penn (school's out).  There was a lot to like.  Yes, some of it was derivative, much of it was action driven.  But the whole rip-off of Wrath of Khan nonsense I have been hearing?  It reminds me of much of the outcry when Gladiator was released, decrying it as a pale nothing compared to that great flick Spartacus.  Which, umm, was largely panned by the critics when it was released.  Much as Khan was considered great only in comparison to that tendentious pile of dung which was the first Star Trek film.  And forgive me if I prefer Cumberpatch to Montalban.

I also disagree with those who say this film strays away from the Roddenberry vision.  Ultimately, Kirk rejects a militarization of the Federation, and sacrifices himself for the greater good.  Classic Roddenberry.

Since Bill already mentioned Cher, I will skip the birthday video for an anniversary video.  Happy anniversary to Shakespeare's sonnets, first published on this date in 1609:
