I recommend an additional wonderful resource: The Battle Cry of Frreddom, by James M. McPherson.   This is a great book about the American Civil War.  While the book describes the military history of the civil war, it also sets the battles in the context of changing American economy, demographics and politics.  The first third of the book looks at the what America was like before the war, the economy north and south, and the different political movements before and during the war.

Practically required reading for every American. McPherson's long essays about the meaning of Antietam and teaching Gettysburg have been published in book form and are well worth finding.
