    I think everyone wrote it off as Likely GOP because it narrowly went for McCain in 2008.

      As late as 2008 he was running for office as a Republican, after campaigns that went no wherein 1976, 1978, and 1982 as a GOPer.  I don't think he raised much money either.  He looked like a weak candidate in a district people thought Romney would win, since it was conventional wisdom that Romney would do better than McCain pretty much everywhere.

        He was the only Dem candidate to win in CA who signed the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Association pledge.

          basically stopped campaigning after the primary so I wouldn't be surprised if Fox actually ended up spending more money than him in the general election.

          In fact, the occasional victory for the GOP cannot hide the fact that this country is fast heading into another era, not of two-party democracy, but a party-and-a-half system. And the GOP is the half a party- Larry Sabato
