Baroness French and Lady Saunders are not so implausible. Almost anyone who achieves eminence in their profession can get a peerage nowadays. It has all been downhill since the Victorians started considering merit instead of large landholdings and ennobled the painter Frederic Leighton and the poet Alfred Tennyson.
