Sorry, there is plenty of personal bias involved when you decide that a young scout is now a victim of demonization.

(leaving aside the whole issue of the event itself & what it says about guns, leadership and propaganda)

After all, his parents wouldn't let him take part in a group activity because they didn't like guns.  The scout has been denied a useful learning and socialization experience because of it.

Learning how to use a gun and handle one properly is a good thing -- it reduces the chances that kids will handle a gun they do not have permission to handle, and that if they do, they're less likely to, say, shoot their siblings in the face when they do.  It's not like they're going to have access to a gun at home, so you get all the benefits of that statistical reduction without the usually commensurate (and overwhelming) statistical increase to the chance of an accidental shooting that comes from having a gun in the home.

That, and the kid won't fully understand the feeling power that comes from being armed with a gun.  I'm not saying that that feeling of power is a good thing, but it's something to be learned from.  With proper guidance and reflection, becomes a lesson in the way that those who are gun-nuts think.  One cannot truly understand an experience without participating in it.

Mine is that I don't see gun class weekend as a particularly useful "learning and socialization experience". Depending on the kid,far from it. I imagine there are many group activities that a parent and kid opt out of...or at least that was our experience successfully raising a large batch of them into adulthood.
