Congress should be raising not cutting but till they do, what Obama is doing is sort of an end around.

First he is advocating raising the minimum wage. He should be advocating raising it more but he isn't exactly preaching to the choir.

Secondly he is cutting the tax break threshold of the people who wanted the Bush tax cuts to be permanent, and trying to put more money back in the social security trust fund  it has been taken from.

He's advocating raising the cap, and trying to improve the economy because nothing is going to work like putting more people back in the workforce.

In 2014 when the troops come home from Afghanistan and affordable care kicks in that's going to make a difference; Assuming we spend less on a smaller military there should be a peace dividend.

Most of the cuts I have been able to find Him proposing are to the subsidies to the insurance companies.

Insurance companies demanded they be subsidized for providing care to people on SSI disability with existing conditions and or requiring catastrophic care or medicaid Obama agreed to mandates so  that the increased number of people being given affordable healthcare meant enough more clients that the subsidies could be removed.

As someone on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, I get my healthcare from the VA, but still don't want to see anyone get their benefits cut, but the people who are insisting on it are Republicans in Congress so lets call them out get rid of them and then see where Obamacare ends up.

    •  The C-CPI is a cut in Social Security benefits (6+ / 0-)

And there is only one thing that's going to make me angrier than the cut itself and that is the lying spin that it isn't a cut.

If the Democratic Party thinks they can lie me into voting for cuts in my own Social Security that are not only liars they are crazy liars and crazy liars is a pretty good definition of Republicans so don't tell me it makes a difference.

      •  There is no "C-CPI" (1+ / 0-)

What we have now is C-CPI-W. It is a basket designed around working people. C-CPI-E is a basket designed around Seniors who spend more on healthcare and medications so they appreciate having more of a cost of living increase for their insurance and meds. C-CPI-U which incorporates C-CPI-E and creates a basket which is a better deal for people on Social Security comes with a raise in the minimum wage and an end to the cap. Its exactly what Obama says it is. He isn't going to balance the deficit on the backs of the poor and the elderly. As somebody who is both poor and elderly I appreciate that.

        •  The cap is never going to end (0+ / 0-)

That's an absurd pipe dream. If we can't even get the top tier income tax rate raised by a few percentage points, how are we going to get a 13% increase passed? There's zero chance of that happening.

If it gets raised a bit that will be very good, but it doesn't in any way balance out a lower COLA since it doesn't directly help retirees. And neither does a raise in the minimum wage.

    •  Stop the spin,please. (6+ / 0-)

C-CPI is both a cut and a tax increase. Further, can you tell me where Obama endorsed raising the cap? Certainly this was something he espoused as a candidate in 2008,but not recently.

      •  Its neither (0+ / 0-)

It actually gives me a better basket and the tax adjustment works to extend the period over which the thresholds on the Bush tax cuts that were supposed to get eliminated over $200,000 get their cuts raised.
