  •  Hurray!! We plan to continue throughout summer (5+ / 0-)

Many Republican lawmakers have plans to rush these bills through the processes and wrap up their session by May or June. That's ludicrous. Two thousand bills?

In any case, protests will continue as long as they're needed. And they are needed.

It's a crazy shame that our legislators meet in secret with ALEC but not publicly with constituents. It's not only a shame; it's against the North Carolina Constitution:

Section 12 - Right of assembly and petition
The people have a right to assemble together to consult for their common good, to instruct their representatives, and to apply to the General Assembly for redress of grievances; but secret political societies are dangerous to the liberties of a free people and shall not be tolerated.

This is it -- our moment. If we let this time slip by without raising our voices, we're stuck with this shit for a long, long time.

The voter ID and other voter-suppression bills, if passed, will kick in in January 2016. How conveeeeeeeeenient, no? Even if we sweep the legislature and replace the ALEC legislators in 2014, we'd not be able to overturn those laws by 2014. Sure, we could hope for judicial overturns, but ... that's a gamble.

Art Pope is our state deputy budget director. I have to tell myself that out loud every day: "Art Pope is our state's deputy budget director." That alone is enough to get me to Raleigh to protest!

So c'mon over. We'll chant, "Forward together! Not one step back!" on the Bicentennial Mall together and walk over to the General Assembly. You'll tell your kids and grandkids about the time you got yourself arrested for your principles while singing "We shall overcome."
