  •  One possible clue is the kid's TV show (6+ / 0-)

It's the Prisoner.  Very clearly The Prisoner.  And there's a snippet of Patrick McGoohan denying The Village powers that be "what they want."

Which, for fans of the show, is INFORMATION.

Several of the elements of the show, including Don's swan dive and Ken's tap dancing, seem ripped right out of the Old School Prisoner (which would have been on TV in mid-1968).

The Prisoner was the first puzzle series, and Matthew Weiner (and JJ Abrams) owe an awful lot to McGoohan and company in that sense.

I can't help but think this means that the most iconic exchange from the show has significance for Don/Dick.

    "Who are you?"
    "I am Number Two."
    "Who is Number One?"
    "You are Number Six."

And then, in the end, we find out that last line is missing punctuation.

    "Who is Number One?"
    "You are, Number Six."

For those of you who prefer Bartlett to Obama, re-watch the West Wing. For those who prefer Clinton, re-watch old news videos.

and if this was an homage  to either of those shows, I didn't see it. You always knew that Patrick McCoohan was cool and that he would never break: even when he worked so hard to escape, only to discover he never got anywhere except back at the village.

I'd say that was the point of all of that frenzy of activity. Running on the treadmill and getting nowhere, but it seems a little trite don't you think?

Don didn't look cool. He just looked totally confused and dorky. In fact, they all looked dumb when they came down from their amphetamine highs delivered by Dr. Feelgood making his regular office/house call.

And maybe that's another point of the story line. Drugs make you dumb. Especially because you don't know how dumb you are looking when you think you have gotten the BIG answer to all of the questions.
