basements, like DFW area where there are so few, after having lived in a place which had them.

Unfortunately, there is little you can do. There are no public shelters specifically for tornadoes because first there normally isn't time to run for one and secondly, you shouldn't be out in the streets during one of these storms.

Depending on whether the bathroom or closet is more centrally located and has windows, get in the bathtub or closet, bringing along a couple sofa cushions to cover yourself with.

If you have any heavy clothes or coats you can place over your head, that could help.

The good news is that the OK tornado was very strong and that is not common.  And the percentage of homes in any given metro area which are actually hit is a small percentage. So, percentage-wise, your probability of a direct hit is small.

What is more damaging is the flying debris which can harm people farther out. That's why being in the bathtub or closet can help.

I simply hate that DFW area homes do not have basements.  Where I came from farther north, practically every home in every town had them. For good reason.
