What you are talking about happened long after Gap ruined BR. Gap started destroying BR the day they bought it. That is the nature of conglomerates.

The original Banana Republic was a specialty mail-order company run by people who focused on quality and customer satisfaction. They sold quality business casual and travel-wear. Sure, they focused on the Indiana Jones/Adventure theme, how better to appeal to business travelers who live rather non-romantic lives, and dream of adventure? Most importantly though, they were picky about their merchandise, and made sure it would serve their customers well.

Gap had to remake the brand because they could not turn Banana Republic into a chain store otherwise. Old BR could offer quality at reasonable prices because they were a warehouse and a catalog, and didn't have to operate stores. Gap BR just could not offer the same quality of merchandise at competitive prices.

Workers of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your shackles. It is by the picket line and direct action that true freedom will be won, not by electing people who promise to screw us less than the other guy.
