    There have always been tornadoes in that area but a hundred years ago when the population was much thinner the chances of a tornado tearing through a large population center was less likely. Now that there is are more people and building everywhere there is a high likelihood that any given tornado that touches down is going to hit a lot of buildings.

    This is the same problem we are seeing worldwide. Earthquakes happen with the same frequency but now that everyplace is filled with people it is almost guaranteed to shake up a spot with lots of people and structures. There isn't any real solution sort of shrinking the population.
