I'm not asking why every person didn't have a shelter.

I am asking why the schools did not have adequate shelter.

After all, oil and natural gas production in Oklahoma in 2006 (for example) was worth $14 billion - in one year!

It would seem like the elected officials of Oklahoma would be able to "siphon" off a tiny, tiny portion of that wealth in taxes to make sure that their own children in their own schools had adequate protection from common natural disasters like tornadoes.

      tax. I pulled this from:

      http://www.ncsl.org/...

Seven percent if greater than $2.10 mcf; four percent if greater than $1.75 mcf but less than $2.10 mcf; and one percent if less than $1.75 mcf natural gas and casinghead gas (a byproduct of natural gas extraction), and 0.95 percent levied on crude oil, casinghead gas and natural gas.

Oil Gross Production Tax is variable based on the average price of Oklahoma oil. The tax rate is seven percent if average price is equal to or exceeds $17/bbl; four percent if the average price is less than $17/bbl but equal to or exceeds $14/bbl; and one percent if the average price is less than $14/bbl.

      "let's talk about that"

      •  Yes, I know there are taxes. (0+ / 0-)

My question is what is more important than a child's safety?

What is a higher spending priority?

It might be interesting to see how much was spent on education, for example, in Oklahoma in 2006 (for instance) when oil and gas worth $14 billion was extracted in that year. Not to mention the worth of all the other business that was conducted within the state borders.

Oklahoma's leaders pride themselves on low tax rates and favorable conditions for businesses.

One is tempted to wonder if low tax rates and favorable business conditions are more important than the safety of their children during a type of natural hazard/disaster that happens commonly in Oklahoma every year.

    •  Bet the children of the wealthy (0+ / 0-)

And the politicians have a safe place to go.

Moore is where the working people, the families of soldiers stationed at the Air Force base, and others that are not so wealthy live. My brother used to live there. I am very happy he moved after retiring.
