I'm not from the plains, but I grew up in Alabama, and we know a little something about tornadoes. I lived through the Super Outbreak on April 3, 1974, and the 2011 Alabama tornadoes resulted in widespread power outages during the week of my father's funeral - and by "widespread" I mean essentially the entire Tennessee Valley, with the exception of the Florence / Muscle Shoals area.

Generally speaking, the schools were considered more safe than the surrounding homes - they are more substantial construction and typically more resistant to high winds.  More than once, we fled our home and went to the nearby school, a designated shelter, during warnings.  Not an underground shelter specifically for tornadoes, but rather just a more substantial building than our house.  Sheltering in churches is also common, for the same reason.

The second-guessing of the school personnel is sickening to me.  It is going on big time today over at Free Republic, so maybe some of y'all can go over there and pile on.

    •  Yes. What you said. I am fucking sick of (0+ / 0-)

people saying the school acted negligently.  They had mere minutes between the warning and the hit, and some people are saying they should have evacuated?!?!  Who the can load a school bus and get out of the way of a 2-mile wide tornado in 15 minutes?  Nobody, that's who.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!
