  •  From Teen Thru College I Competed At Yacht Clubs (7+ / 0-)

in the same category, based out of Lake Erie or midwest university. I've been to Larchmont, a number of the better lower Great Lakes clubs including Chicago Yacht Club, and Toronto's Royal Canadian Yacht Club with its oldest lawn bowling court in North America, which was on its own island and had a dress code for the launch to take you over. And back then, no women allowed on the porch except Sunday afternoons. Or an analogous restriction, it's been a while.

I've toured 3 America's Cup 12-meter yachts, starting with Ted Turner's first which he pointedly converted to an ocean racer to win the first world ocean racing championship while meticulously preserving the America's Cup handicap rules for a boat never intended to go outside semi protected harbors. The stay wires holding up the mast were not wire, they were solid; as an indication of what was extreme building practice in the early 70's, the "wires" were airfoil shape to cut down drag. Also toured the Intrepid's last rebuild (forbidden as hell) and one other including pacing its full sized lines lofted on the floor. Even more forbidden as hell.

It's true what they said about these top yachts. The rules required a toilet but said nothing about seats, so to save weight they were seatless.

These are the caliber of yachtsmen who were using depleted uranium as keel ballast back in the 70's when I began working in boat building, and cheating their own rules to use carbon fiber layup which was too new to be allowed for competitive vessels for the various advantages it conferred.

All these places are on the scale of initiation and annual fees as this Boston club of the diary.

They're just like us, but they do have a different concern-set.

3k initiation, $150.oo a month dues and you have to drop $50.oo in the bar every month of the year. And that gets your modest sized overnighter motor or sail boat a dock too. Very modestly upper middle class. But they don't have the retired machinists, vets, or working public school teacher members they had when I represented them as regional junior sailing champ.

And I'll never be invited for a 40th or 50th anniversary of my win for them.
