  •  you haven't the slighest idea what you are talking (10+ / 0-)

    about:

Surely 3 or so grapefruits a day for a few weeks is a megadose of vitamin C.
typical vitamin C in a grapefruit:

    33mg/100g
    http://www.docstoc.com/...
    14mg/100ml

typical amounts of vitamin C used per single IV therapy infusion: 25-60 grams.  This is >1000x the vitamin C in a grapefruit.

You are just an ignorant pseudoscientist prentending you know things that  you don't.  Next time you might want to do some research.

    •  Define Megadose of Vitamin C (0+ / 0-)
Table 1: Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for Vitamin C [8]
      Age    Male    Female    Pregnancy    Lactation
      0–6 months    40 mg*    40 mg*
      7–12 months    50 mg*    50 mg*
      1–3 years    15 mg    15 mg
      4–8 years    25 mg    25 mg
      9–13 years    45 mg    45 mg
      14–18 years    75 mg    65 mg    80 mg    115 mg
      19+ years    90 mg    75 mg    85 mg    120 mg
Smokers    Individuals who smoke require 35 mg/day
      more vitamin C than nonsmokers.

The dose you would give a starving person with Vitamin C deficiency will of course be higher than the dose a healthy person is recommended to take.

      •  Pseudo Science me? (0+ / 0-)
Those who think that if a little vitamin C is good, more must be better should think again, says a team of British researchers, who found that a supplement of 500 milligrams a day could damage people's genes.

         While Megadoses in

typical amounts of vitamin C used per single IV therapy infusion: 25-60 grams.
are sometimes medically necessary because of emergency and <em>despite the health risks megadoses for normal healthy people are quite different.
For example the amount of booze a lifetime alcoholic finds ok could very well get a normal person quite sick.
Learn to not compare apples and oranges before you rush to judgement.
Pseudo Science is making sure a study that finds Vitamin C kills TB in the lab gets published so that the rubes make a leap of logic and assume that means that eating more vitamin c kills TB.
Thus boosting vitamin c pill sales. If Vitamin C did prevent TB surely the groups that eat the most Vitamin C would have lower not higher TB rates than the general population.
Given the virulent reaction to this post I must wonder if Big Pharma is sending in the trolls?

You don't go making that kind of charge without some solid evidence, and most of the commenters taking issue with you are known as long term and reputable membrs of the community.

And as far as the study you are calling out goes, it isn't telling anybody to go by giant bottles of Vit. C tablets, or eat an orange a day, or anything remotely woowoo. It says they have found some interesting effects in the lab of Vit. C impacts on TB, and their findings make it worthwhile to do further studies.
