  •  I understand perfectly. (5+ / 0-)

I've also traveled in several police states. This is not abstract, to me at least, or to my friends who have spent time in their prisons.

Long story short, you have no idea what repression is.

    Fuck me, it's a leprechaun.

    •  Please stop your shit. (18+ / 0-)

The fact is that the security apparatus is being used to silence journalists.  This is something police states do.  That is not the same as saying the US is a full-blown police state, but that we have taken a qualitative step down that road.  The quotes by national security reporters I linked to show that chilling effect.

If you have an argument, make it, but stop this deliberate stupidity.

Are you worried supplies may get low, and you'd have to turn to the black market to get as much deliberate stupidity as you seem to need?

You have no argument. Deal with it.

        •  Yes, as stated above, you folks are falling apart. (9+ / 0-)

A police state had no origin, and there are no steps taken along the way.  And this glorious administration and its glorious party are by no means hastening the process...

(I can't imagine what you'll do with the shitstorm Keystone XL is going to cause.)

I see that a lot of people are throwing "stupid" at each other.  LaEscapee, 3goldens, and toby esterhase rec'd it when it came from MrJayTee but HR'd it from MBNYC.  In addition, it appears that all parties are engaged in discussion and nobody should be throwing donuts at anyone.

Anyhow, if the word "stupid" is HRable, we'd all be autobanned by now and DKos would have no active users.

          •  Well, there's always DBAD to fall back on (0+ / 0-)

Unless of course DBAD is a rule only broken by one side, and not the other.

            Nope, no rule violation here.

Yet a comment the other day, that said little more than "lame diary" got HR'd by DBAD ENFORCERS from...guess which side?

But thank you for your brave uprate, nonetheless. Somebody's gotta fight the injustice around here.

but that's really not necessary. The idea that a TU who joined in 2006 is somehow trollish has some amusement value, certainly, but little by the way of actual relevance.

On at least 90% of the issues we talk about here at DK, we pretty much are all on the same side and should definitely work together on those.

But there are always going to be a few that people will disagree, and do so passionately.  That is absolutely ok. I have actually changed my mind about some things going through those debates.  Others I haven't but it is still a good thing to talk about these issues.

Like President Obama says, we can disagree without being disagreeable.  Sorry if that sounds corny, but I try to do that (I too have been guilty of being disagreeable though, but I try).  I am angry at the Administration about this and will fight them in the little way I can, but the President has done some good things too, obviously.

              Best Regards,

When any administration, D or R, goes after our core constitutional protections, even in subtle ways, I get pissed.

What happens when the next Republican President goes after the other parts of the 1st, freedom of association, speech, imposing a certain religion?

              •  It's your false assumption that they will, (0+ / 0-)

encoded in the word when, that makes your question unanswerable

The fact is, the press has never been exempt from laws involving breaches of national security, and the Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld bans and censorship in those respects.  They've also overruled government intrusion when national security was not at stake (Near v Minnesota, the Pentagon Papers case, etc).

Read about the Office of Censorship during World War 2.  Did you know they used to open people's mail?  The slope is not always slippery, my friend.  In fact, it isn't always even a slope.

It's also something non-police states do, too.  Unless you've never heard of gag orders, or the Office of Censorship during World War 2, and so on.
