  •  All good and laudable efforts, Kelly Rigg, thanks! (0+ / 0-)

At the same time, I appreciate the frustration of a few of the above comments that such efforts will not make any substantive difference in addressing the dynamics and direction of the underlying systems that are based on infinite growth on a finite planet.

IMHO, I think that simultaneous with making changes to our personal choices that strive for and encourage sustainability we should be pushing our politicians, policy-makers, and business leaders to begin openly discussing how we are going to transform our socioeconomic and financial systems from growth-based models to ones based on steady-state economics.

I think a good starting place would be to begin seriously experimenting with alternatives to GDP, such as the Genuine Progress Indicator (like what Maryland attempted, but only on a broader scale), as well as modeling what type of real impact External Cost Internalization might have on people's lives.

Both of these conceptual tools have been around since Rio 20 years ago and it's way past time we started taking them seriously as a means to facilitate the transition which is bearing down on us like a speeding locomotive.
