    I only caught the last thirty minutes of the movie; in researching it for this piece, I see that my description of the plot based on that fleeting impression doesn't do it full justice.  The harsh economical realities of the time and the threat of the show closing are the main forces propelling the plot; and if the film is largely escapist -- which I do not think is a bad thing in fiction -- it is not without the hint in the background of what the characters are escaping from.
