    The GOES satellite outage meant that for many hours stream gauge data, much of it provided by the USGS, was not available to the public. The information is used by NOAA for flood predictions, but it is also broadcast through the USGS Water Data site and informs all sorts of communities, like public safety officials. If this had happened during some sort of major storm this outage could have killed people and destroyed property.

    There was a significant gap in this coverage for at least six hours, affecting stream gauge reporting principally east of the Mississippi River.
