And embarrassing itself in the process.

There are no grounds for action against Obama in this IRS debacle. It was poor judgment, true, but in a fuzzy and contentious area. Any hint of political activity in an application for 501c status will trigger increased scrutiny whoever files it.

In fact, each of the three I've filed in past years - all pure, all for community groups who had zero to do with politics - took many months for the IRS to process. A large number of questions open the door to disclosures about whether the group has any political agenda, broadly speaking.

A lot can be said about the difficulty of dealing with organizations seeking one or another form of tax-exempt status. Granting 501c(3) and (4) status is not - and should not be - a matter of course. When/if all the fiery heat of the Far Right cools down, there might be chance to review the law and regulations in this area, to provide some help to staffers stuck handling inherently contentious issues.

2014 IS COMING. Build up the Senate. Win back the House : 17 seats. Plus!

The Bush admin tore into the CDC for basically saying abstinence only policies were killing our children. Bush had funding for AIDS research slashed, the CDC was audited by the IRS over and over again with never any evidence of wrong doing, and Bush even had pro-safe sex pages on the CDC shut down. Outcries by Republicans (or Dems for that matter)? Not a peep.

      Strange but not a stranger.
