analyze these types of issues based on my own particular situation, be it ethnicity, economic status, personal experiences, social circles, etc.

Once you do that, you inject all kinds of biases into the analysis.

One question thought; How is Obama "one of them?"  He's a millionaire set for life; him and his family will want for nothing for the rest of their lives (rightly so).

How is he one of them?

Remember, most people in the US, regardless of race or class, see themselves as having the potential to achieve the "American Dream" regardless of the improbability of this happening.  The optimism that it could be achieved is still very strong.

Second, Obama's race and upbringing factor in, despite his current wealth.  He looks like "them" and, to some degree, has the mannerisms of "them".  His oratory sounds like a preacher from an African-American church.  He fits.  And, given the history of race and discrimination in the US, you have to appreciate the power of that dynamic.  Yes, the likes of Cornell West will argue he has not done enough for minorities, but he's kind of like the Jackie Robinson of politics, though in truth, the trail was blazed by Jessie Jackson...

Speaking of Rev. Jackson, also understand that this demographic is very religious and often views their world through a religious lens.  I can't tell you how many chats I've had with black women reading a Bible on the bus or Latinos in a Catholic setting.

Finally, understand that all politics truly is local.  As much as I can scream about the need to end gerrymandering in my state (PA), the truth is that the urban minority voters I work with are much more concerned about who can get things done to improve the issues that are foremost in their minds.  Things like "surveillance state" or drone warfare just do not register with them.
