  •  Its just a horrible tradgedy all round (0+ / 0-)

that young men and women are the ones who go off to war, or off to revolution, rebellion, crusade, jihad, and through covert actions, death squads, special forces, engage other young people with  individual acts of heroism, sacrifice, patriotism, protest, terror.

In the war of my youth which took place in Vietnam, many survivors came home haunted by the ghosts of the innocent who got killed for being in the wrong place; the new recruits who hadn't learned what booby traps were, the peasant farmers little girl with her clothes burned off by napalm.

I suppose that is true of all wars, past, present, future.

In my fathers war in which he served as a coastwatcher in the Solomon's and a medic at Guadacanal, indigenous populations who happened to live in places being prepared for invasion, plantations full of farmers were treated like so much foliage when the time came to begin the shelling. Cities were fire bombed and nuked.

The horror of man's inhumanity to man seems to escape peaceful civilian populations till somebody brings it home to them.

The Gulf wars of my son's time and Irag and Iran were probably the last of the set piece wars; recently there has been a distinct change to covert actions with the killing by drone or other means of assassination that tends to make war inhumane in a way it has never been before.

Going back to one man killing another by hand instead of through some impersonal industrialized mechanism where the targeting is done in Vegas and the results occur half a world away is almost quaint.
