  •  Farmers get federal aid for their crops, for land (4+ / 0-)

improvements, and for crop insurance.  Most of the farmers I've talked to all cry and moan about all those welfare cheats and bums who get government assistance like snap, but they sure smile on the way to the bank to deposit their government checks.

There are SOME small to midsized farmers left who do understand that those subsidies matter.  Many are in the Midwest, where the politics of farming are different than in the South.

friend of mine is 4th/5th generation family farmer. Built up the farm to about 800 acres (very small by  corporate standards). But they were the first in the area to introduce terracing, crop rotations (years ago), No-till planting, Corn and Soybeans, limited herbicides. They just missed the drought last summer, fingers crossed again this year. Unpredictable weather makes it all a gamble. Without crop insurance backup, one really bad year and it would be all over. but because of good practice they get good yields (that is, better than their neighbors per acre) and so have succeeded - so far.

I've known the grandson for 50 years now. They were fighting Indians when his great-grandfather homesteaded.

And If you need more land for economy of scale - well, it's now around $12,000 an acre. Good Luck.

Without geometry, life is pointless. And blues harmonica players suck.
