  •  My guess is, assuming they have these (9+ / 0-)

conferences every year, is that next year they vote and pass to end discrimination against Scout leaders.

    We'll see.

    •  Maybe not next year, but before long (16+ / 0-)

The biggest reason will be the patent absurdity of kicking out the Eagle Scout who wants to remain as a leader as soon as he turns 18.

I am proud that my church, when asked by the local Boy Scout council (we sponsor a troop) how we felt about changing the rule, told them that not only did we have no objection to changing it, we thought it should definitely be changed.

      •  Exactly. (5+ / 0-)

        This is an unsustainable policy.

At this point, I'd say we should let it evolve where it's going to go on its own.

        •  It won't happen. (6+ / 0-)

Mostly because an openly gay scout will probably not be a member of a troop full of bigoted assholes. The non-assholes will be thrilled to have an 18-year-old scout continue to help with Troop programs and will allow him to register as an adult.

Our troop has done this before the ban happened. If BSA would just shut the fuck up about it, people will end up forgetting that gay adults aren't allowed. I think most of the public will read about this and come away with "gays are allowed in Boy Scouts now."

Our troop always allowed gay scouts and adults so this doesn't affect us directly. But it does affect my kids who feel that putting Eagle Scout on a resume might hurt them because the person reading it might think they hate gay people.

      •  This will make it easier to ignore the ban (5+ / 0-)

on adults. Most charter organizations don't keep up with policy. I have a feeling gay adults will be allowed and it will not become an issue. Once the media frenzy about allowing gay scouts dies down, people will just think it means they "allow gays."

Our troop already has gay leaders and parents registered. We don't care and our charter organization doesn't care. It is kind of obvious when the district visits the troop and...they don't care.

The truth is scouts is a dying organization anyway. Kids are too busy and scouts isn't cool. They are lucky to have anyone want to join and work to make each troop better. We are thrilled to have parents volunteer and we follow the Youth Protection policy which every troop should do anyway.

They changed this policy because BSA is broke financially and the big corporate donations are drying up because of this policy. Also, many churches which charter troops don't support discrimination so it is harder to find charter organizations to start new troops.

      •  Also creates interesting issues for scouts (5+ / 0-)

who fulfill the requirements for gaining Eagle Scout rank before turning 18 but who can't have the ceremony of receiving it until afterwards - I know of at least one person who was probably at least a month over 18 before he properly got the rank.

And after 18, the view of the BSA at the national level is that those scouts are so much a threat to younger scouts that they cannot serve as officially sanctioned role models. Including at their own Eagle Scout ceremonies.

Yeah, that's going to be a problem, logistically...

Prayers and best wishes to those in Boston, in Texas, and for this week to be over without anything else happening.
