The remains are being bought and the Fisker Karma will reappear on the nation's highways.  So progress continues, despite some setbacks.

Mostly because they came out with a hybrid.  It was a new company and they needed to be on the forefront of technology and hybrids are just the short lived transition between ICE and EV.

be around for a long time, filling a very specific market need.

I know people who commute 50 mi each way to the office and then spend six hours a day on the road for sales calls.

Plug-in hybrids will continue to make sense for folks like that, probably for decades.

They'll also be highly desirable for rental fleets.  Even if we have 350 mi ranges with 4 hr charge times in 20 years, most people would still rather park their Series V S sedan and rent something like a Volt if they're driving from L.A. to the Grand Canyon.

For 9 years I have looked at all electric and it just won't work for me.  We did not want the stop gap of the hybrid.

But our car was hit by a truck 5 mos ago and totaled.  So we looked at the Volt (too expensive) and Leaf (not enough range), salivated at prospect of Tesla (but, too expensive).

We ended up buying a used Altima Hybrid.

We should have done that years ago.  Getting mid 30's gas mileage doesn't sound like much but we went from getting 400 miles to the tank (same model car sans hybrid portion) to 650-750 a tank.

Put that way we have been bowled over.

Pure, ICE cars may be around for decades to fill that specific role but not hybrids.  For long distance travel a pure ICE will be more fuel efficient than a hybrid.

The purpose of a hybrid is to give the short distance efficiency of an EV while maintaining the ability to quickly refuel for long distance travel.  If you are regularly driving sufficiently far to deplete a near future EVs batteries in a single day, a pure ICE will almost certainly be a better option than a hybrid.

All of this of course assumes that the main drawback of EVs, the long recharge time, isn't solved in the near future.  If an EVs energy storage can be replenished, either through faster recharge and battery swapping, in a time comparable to refueling a gas tank then EVs will completely take over.

more fuel efficient than a hybrid with comparable horsepower be on the market?
