    and going for the premium market first also means they stand a much better shot at building the infrastructure needed to make EVs viable primary vehicles.

    Their charging stations can be more expensive to start out, and they can make even more money from selling concessions to mid- and upscale restaurants/shops.

    And the market they're selling to can afford to travel quite a bit, and to take the routes where the charging stations happen to be instead of the cheaper/shorter route.

    And people who can buy $90,000 cars are likely to be investors and friends of investors. This brings in capital, if it's needed.

    Tesla's doing what Apple did with the iPod and iPhone: give people with disposable cash something that they really want. Don't compromise to hit a price point. Rich people are a great market if you're looking for early-adopters. That's what they're good for - that's the only legitimate economic advantage to concentrated wealth - and we need to use them more to expand the green-tech industry. Don't market 'green' - market 'awesome.'
