    I don't have a basement, and--to be honest--I'd be in the doghouse for the next year or two if some experiment ran awry and ruined furniture, countertops, etc...

    Now, having said that, there are quite a few decent "kitchen chemistry" experiments that will feed a youngster's interest WHILE keeping your kitchen intact.

    Here's a good starting point.

    This kind of stuff is particularly good because you can do them with young ones for the "whoa, cool" reaction...and then do them again when they take HS chemistry and ask them to EXPLAIN the "whoa, cool"...even the old shine-a-coin-with-lemon-juice-and-salt takes on new meaning when your kid has to explain it to you properly.  grin.

    I can also highly recommend this EXCELLENT book of experiments; I worked through this book when I was a kid, and I think I still have my copy somewhere...

    The word "parent" is supposed to be a VERB, people...
